The Ultimate Moving Checklist: Your Key to a Stress-Free Relocation
Moving can feel overwhelming, but with a solid plan, you can avoid last-minute panic. At Om Packers and Movers, we believe a well-organized move is a stress-free move.
Follow this simple, week-by-week checklist, and you’ll be settled in your new home before you know it!
8 Weeks Before the Move
1. Plan and Budget
- Create a Moving Binder/Folder: Start one folder (digital or physical) to keep all quotes, receipts, important documents, and checklists.
- Establish a Budget: Determine your maximum moving spend, including furniture, deposits, travel, and our moving services.
- Contact Om Packers and Movers: Request an initial quote and schedule a home survey (in-person or video) to get the most accurate estimate.
2. Declutter (The Most Important Step!)
- Sort Every Item: Go through every closet, attic, and drawer. Categorize items into Keep, Donate, Sell, and Toss.
- Host a Sale: List large items (furniture, appliances) on online marketplaces or plan a garage sale. The less you move, the more you save!

3. Book Your Services
- Confirm with Om Packers and Movers: Finalise your booking with us and confirm your moving date. The earlier you book, the better the rate and availability.
- Verify Insurance: Discuss your insurance options with us (transit or all-inclusive) and ensure your high-value items are covered.
- Order Supplies: If you are self-packing, start gathering high-quality moving boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and markers.
4. Prepare Documents and Records
- Update Medical Records: Collect records from doctors and dentists and arrange for transfers to new providers if moving long distance.
- School Transfers: Notify your children’s schools and arrange for record transfers.
4 Weeks Before the Move
5. Official Notifications
- Change of Address: File your official change of address with the post office.
- Notify Key Parties: Inform your bank, credit card companies, insurance providers, and subscription services of your new address.
- Cancel Local Services: Cancel or transfer local club memberships, gym contracts, and newspaper subscriptions.
6. Start Packing Non-Essentials
- Start the Process: Begin packing items you won’t need until after the move: seasonal clothing, extra bedding, decorative items, books, and photo albums.
- Label Clearly: Label boxes with the Room they go in and a brief list of Contents (e.g., “Guest Bedroom – Winter Sweaters”).
2 Weeks Before the Move
7. Utility Management
- Schedule Disconnection: Contact electricity, gas, water, internet, and cable providers to disconnect services at your old home the day after you move.
- Schedule Connection: Arrange for new services to be connected at your new home the day before you arrive.
8. Finish Preparation
- Appliance Prep: Empty and defrost the freezer and refrigerator. Clean and dry all appliances.
- Valuables: Gather all high-value items (jewellery, passports, financial records) and place them in a single, secure box that you will transport yourself (The “Essentials” Box).
- Vehicle Prep: If moving your vehicle, arrange for its transfer or service booking with us.
1 Week Before the Move
9. Final Packing and Deep Clean
- Finalise General Packing: Pack everything except what you need for the final day (toiletries, a few outfits, cleaning supplies).
- Prepare Appliances: Disconnect and secure all major appliance parts (washing machine drums, remote controls).
- Prepare for Our Team: Empty and take apart any simple furniture (beds, tables) that you planned to disassemble yourself to save on labour time.
10. The “Essentials” Box
